little laurel bow

Continuing to finish off the projects I started in the Summer, brings me to the very light laurel bow I started to carve for my daughter before I got distracted by the pair of yew character bows.  This little bow is about 63 inches from end to end and has a draw weight of about 20pounds at 24 inches, or about 15 pounds for my daughters 20 inch draw, so plenty of growing room ! The bow is hollow-limb, meaning the belly of the bow is carved away in a curve that mirrors the natural curve on the back of the bow – necessary as the draw weight needs to be so low but meaning the wood is very thin at about 3mm.  Just some tip overlays, a little heat to twist the limb straight, and some varnish left to go, so nearly done – all three bows will bevarnished at the same time, so final photos will be posted before too long.
