lion-head tiller handle

I checked through this blog’s archive to make sure that I had posted some pictures of the lion and rope tiller handle mentioned in the last post and found, much to my surprise that I have never posted anything on it as the carving pre-dates this blog, so here it is:

lion head tiller end by Avenue woodcarving

Carved from box (buxus sempervirens) entirely with hand tools three summers ago, the carving took in excess of 50 hours to complete.  The main tools were knife, v-tool and a nearly flat palm-gouge (3mm No 3)

The carving was much lighter in colour originally (if you have seen the image in flickr or pinterest you will know what I am talking about), and has mellowed to this lovely shade over time
